    Solo Christo

    Sola Gratia

    Sola Fide

    Sola Scriptura

These are the great "solas"of the Reformation. Christ alone. Grace alone. Faith alone. Scripture alone. Sola means "alone."You can't get much more Lutheran than the Solas! Nor can you learn more about being a Lutheran than from the doctrines they confess. We are saved by Jesus Christ alone - by His holy life and bitter suffering and death in our place. All that Christ has accomplished for us has been done by grace alone - without any merit or worthiness in us. Faith alone receives His gifts for us with a response of "Amen." And the Good News of Jesus and the salvation He has won for us is sure and certain because it is in Scripture alone. That very Gospel made Martin Luther,well...Lutheran! You too!

Higher Things is pleased to invite you to attend our 2009 Summer Youth Conferences, where we will be rejoicing in the one, true faith Lutherans have believed, taught, and confessed since the Reformation nearly 500 years ago.

  • Higher Homilies

    by The Rev. David Kind

This sermon was preached at "Amen" in Scranton, PA.

    Revelation 22:12-21

Grace, Mercy and Peace be unto you from God our Father and from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen

It’s kind of cool that now that we have come to the end of our week together at this conference, we also have a reading from the very end of the Bible. But coming to the end of things is not always pleasant. And with an event like this one, it can be kind of depressing when you realize later today or tomorrow or in a few more days I’m going to be back home and back to my regular routine. Oh, for a while, you’ll relive this week as you tell about it to your friends who couldn’t come. You’ll exchange pictures on facebook. And hopefully you’ll start planning to come to the next conference. But eventually the joy and excitement of the experience will fade away, even the joy of retelling it will fade.

So it’s a good thing that Jesus gives us something to look forward to, and not talking about the next Higher Things Conference, although I’m pretty sure He wants you to look forward to that too! Rather Jesus tells us to look forward to Him. We’ve been talking about Jesus and His gifts all week long. We’ve even received those gifts, the Word given in sessions, and the Word preached and Sacraments given here in the Chapel. But now Jesus says: “behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.” Now Jesus coming! That’s something to look forward to!

What do you get when you mix three worship services a day, some amazing catechesis, tons of fun, and maybe one too many cans of Diet Coke? Well, why don't we just show you?

Today I had a high privilege and honor: preaching for Matins at a Higher Things conference! I have to admit: preaching for a Higher Things conference gives more pressure than a typical Sunday. There are great preachers of Christ’s Gospel here, and youth whom they have catechized well. A “Higher” standard is expected. Because of that, I scrapped my first homily about one-third of the way through writing it. And boy! Am I glad I did.

The way we dress communicates something about us, doesn’t it? Some professions have ways of dressing that identify people as having certain vocations. Whether they are actual uniforms or unique attire, we can usually pick out of a crowd someone who works in the medical field by her scrubs, a member of the clergy by his clerical collar, a road construction worker by his orange vest and hardhat, or even the pairs of local Mormon missionaries by their black pants, white shirts, and clean-cut hair styles.

Highlights? Well, to begin with, yesterday had a highlight that I forgot to mention at 1:00 a.m. when I blogged. I ran into my third grade teacher. Thirty years ago she was probably one of the early influences that planted the seed for me to desire to pursue the ministry.
